General Properties

Propyleneglycolmethylether acetate, PMA in short, is an ether-like sweet scented, colorless liquid. It bears hygrospcopic properties and it is flammable. It works as drying retarder thanks to its high boiling point and it stabilizes volatility speed for solvents.

Production

Propyleneglycolmethylether is produced by using acetic acid and 1,2- propylene glycol-monomethyl ether. 12- tungstophosphoric acid is used as catalyst.

Applications

Polyeneglycolmethylether is used as a component in dye, ink and cleaning product productions. Many house dyes and automotive varnish coating products contain PMA. PMA is also used in pesticides and varnishes.

Safety Measures and Toxic Values

Polygeneglycolmethylether is extremely flammable and, in high temperatures, is instable. Therefore it must be stored in tightly closed containers and cool locations. It must be kept away from direct fire at all times.

PMA is especially irritant for skin and eyes. It is hazardous if swallowed or inhaled. In high concentrations, it may cause serious damage to neural system.
