General Properties

Di isonyl phthalate is a phthalate that is used as plastifier. It has intermediate molecular weight and low volatility. It is usually sold as a mixture that consists of different isononyl esters of phthalic acid. It is insoluble in water and it can be mixed with organic solvents such as hexane, alcohol and other plastic monomers.

Production

Di isonyl phthalate is usually produced by single-staged esterification of phthalic anhydrid and isonanol in presence of a catalyst.

Applications

Nearly 95% of produced DINP is used as plasticiser in PVC production. The remaining 5% is used for production of other polymers such as rubber.

It is also used for anti-corrosion, pollution blocker, dye, polish, ink and seal strip productions.

Safety Measures and Toxic Values

DINP is carciogenic and it threatens fertility. It damages liver, kidneys and it also negatively affects neural system. It is proven that it is capable to cause obesity. Its fume may be irritant for eyes and skin in higher temperatures.

DINP is needed be heated to become flammable. Therefore, it must be kept away from high temperatures and it must be stored in tightly closed containers.
